A Beginning and an End

This week, Dan and I celebrated our 2 year wedding anniversary. And on that same day, parts of my garden harvest came to an end while progress on the house started.

The cooler weather has stalled the growth of the tomatoes. The ripe tomatoes were splitting, and vines losing their color. So I took one last ripe harvest off, and collected all the green tomatoes. Who knows what'll be done with them yet, but I'm hopeful I can find a use. I also harvested more fall-traditional veggies: pumpkins, sunflower heads, Brussel sprouts, and squash. I'll note I have such relief that this new wave of harvest allows me to take some time to consider their purpose, as opposed to feel the rush of cooking before rot sets in.

As I pulled up shriveled vines, just 50 feet away, work started on our home. Heavy machinery pushed and plowed soil around, creating a new landscape in which our home will arise and any water will flow around. The corners of our house were marked on this new patch of soil, and I repeatedly walked through the would-be rooms. Opening imaginary doors, standing at the kitchen counter, sitting in the living room to look out the beautiful view...it was the first time the vision crafted in paper could truly be felt.

It was a momentous and surreal day.
